VoIP

VoIP Questions

The basics of Voice over Internet Protocol and how it works for your business.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that lets you make voice calls over an internet connection instead of a traditional phone line. It converts sound into digital signals and transmits them over the internet, enabling cost-effective and flexible communication.

One of the big advantages of VoIP is flexibility in the endpoint devices you can use:

  • Desktop phone: Any standard VoIP manufacturer phone, such as Poly, Cisco, or Yealink.
  • Computer softphone: Our service includes a free web-based softphone that turns your PC or Mac into your phone. All you need is a USB headset.
  • Smartphone: With our free mobile app, you can take all your TelCloud communication tools with you wherever you go.

Our TelCloud VoIP service includes calling anywhere in Canada and the continental US for one flat rate. International destinations can be added as a billable feature on request.

Yes. We port your existing number from your current provider, similar to switching cell phone providers. Once we have all the necessary documents, it typically takes 5 to 10 business days to complete.

VoIP quality has improved dramatically thanks to better internet infrastructure. Call quality is only as good as the weakest link in the connection, so when we set you up, we make sure every important component meets the required standard:

  • We start with your internet connection, confirming it can carry a constant, quality stream between our data centre and your office.
  • Next we look at your internal LAN to make sure it's configured properly and won't introduce congestion or errors.
  • Finally we make sure your router and firewall are configured correctly.

Yes. This is one of the practical marketing benefits of VoIP: you can have a local phone number from almost any metropolitan area in Canada or the US. It's especially useful for establishing a local presence in cities you'd like to service.

Hosted VoIP is a cloud-based phone system where the provider manages and maintains the infrastructure. You access the system over the internet to make and receive calls, with no on-site hardware or complex setup. It offers scalability, flexibility, and cost savings, since you only pay for the services you use.

Pricing is a simple monthly per-user fee that depends on your company's size and requirements, plus any additional features you choose to add. Common add-ons include:

  • Call Recording to record calls for later review
  • Call Queuing to hold incoming calls until an agent is free
  • Call Centre with real-time and historical reporting on queue volume, wait times, talk time, service level, and abandoned calls
  • Call Back so callers can leave their number instead of waiting on hold
  • Audio & Video Conferencing with screen share, chat, and file transfer
  • Text to Speech to turn typed greetings into voice files
  • Voicemail to Email with transcription so you never miss a message
  • CRM Integration to make calls from your CRM with automatic contact pop-ups
  • Microsoft Teams Integration to make and receive calls from Teams

  • Enhanced features: Voicemail-to-email, call forwarding, video conferencing, and integration with your other business tools.

  • Improved reliability: With proper setup and internet redundancy, VoIP stays up even when traditional lines have trouble.

PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange, essentially your own internal phone network. If you have an office with 50 employees, you don't want 50 separate phone lines wired individually. Instead you bring in a few lines, or preferably a SIP trunk, and connect it to your PBX. The PBX then routes calls among all your office phones however you've programmed it.
